Variations in tongue piercings

Aside from regular tongue piercings, pierced through the centre of the tongue, other variations have developed, such as 'Viper Bites' - two tongue piercings placed side by side, 'Angel Bites' - two piercings, on placed in front of the other, and upper or lower tongue frenulum piercings.

How is it pierced?

The procedure for tongue piercing involves the spot being marked by the piercer, then the tongue is held in clamps before being stretched and pierced. As with any other piercing, there are risks, and the tongue is a ver sensitive organ, so make sure you pick a safe and experienced piercist and follow their aftercare advice. Bacterial infections are possible, and you really don't want to get one in your tongue, so follow the advice which will range from soaking the mouth in warm salty water to specific guidance on what to look for as signs of infection. Tongue frenulum piercings, also known as tongue web piercings or a 'Marley' are piercings of the connective stretching tissue between the tongue and bottom of the mouth. These piercings are relatively simple, and heal quickly, although they do have a tendency to reject over time. Whether you can have your tongue frenulum pierced depends on your anatomy, as not all people are suitable for this type of piercing.

Aftercare for tongue frenulum piercings can be more complicated than most other piercings, as the healing piercing will come into contact with anything that enters the mouth, including food and smoke (as with all tongue piercings) which can cause irritation but they generally heal a lot faster than other body piercings due to the area of the body, where some people have experienced healing times of anything from two to eight weeks. Many certified piercers suggest after care guidelines such as not to engage in oral sex, not to smoke, and regular rinsing after eating or drinking with a de-ionized saline fluid. Many professionals recommend rinsing with 50/50 mixture of mouthwash and distilled water or a pH balanced, non-alcoholic mouthwash such as Dentyl pH after eating, drinking, smoking; or rinsing on-the-hour. However, always ask your piercist about their aftercare advice.

The risk of rejection is quite high for this piercing, as it is a surface piercing. There is also a high risk of scarring when the jewellery is removed, so before considering a bridge piercing, take some time to think a few things through - the flap of skin on the bridge of the nose is different for each person, so check with the piercist whether they think it's right for you. Do you wear glasses? if so, be aware that a bridge piercing will get in the way of your glasses, so can you switch to contact lenses... There are glasses designed for people with bridge piercings, but they're rare, and replacing them may be extra trouble. Ask your piercer which jewellery's going to fit best with your face and the amount of loose skin you naturally have on your nasal bridge.

Jewelery

Bridge piercings are most commonly pierced with [[Piercing Barbells|straight barbells]], although curved barbells and [[Piercing Barbells|surface bars]] are also possible initial jewelry. Once the piercing is healed, it is possible to wear a [[Captive Bead Rings|captive bead ring]] in it, although depending on the placement of the piercing, a D-ring styled ring may be necessary to prevent migration caused by the pressure exerted by the shape of a ring.

Like many other facial piercings, there are many misconceptions about bridge piercings. Some involve eye problems, such as involuntary eye crossing. Other beliefs have to do with infections from piercings spreading to the brain, via the sinuses. Bridge piercings are a minor piercing and carry very few risks or complications and no impact to the eyes.

Why's it called a Monroe?

Named after the actress Marilyn Monroe, who's famous beauty spot gave inspiration for this piercing, the Monroe is located to the side of the upper lip. It's often located on the left side of the face, although this isn't a hard and fast rule, and piercings above the lip are often referred to as Monroes no matter which side they're on.

The same piercing located on the right can be known as a 'Madonna' or 'Cindy Crawford' due to the location of the singer and model's own beauty marks. Generally pierced with a smaller-gauge stud, the location isn't identicle on everyone, and depends on what the wearer's after,

This piercing is typically fitted with a 12, 16, or 18 gauge labret, the bars of which are usually shortened after healing. The Crayfish piercing is a variation on the monroe - a double version with piercings worn on both sides of the upper lip. When long barbells are worn in the Crayfish, they look similar to the antennae on a crayfish, which is where the name comes from. Most people with a Monroe piercing favor a metal ball or a jewel on the outer-end.

You will be instructed to rinse your mouth with mouthwash, usually a medical strength variety to sterilize your mouth and prevent infection during and after the process.
Your upper lip will be clamped and held in place by the piercer, and then a hollow needle will be passed through the lip (you'll probably be asked to breathe in, then let it out slowly - ths helps to relax everything, and makes it a much easier process)
A labret stud or barbell will be placed in your lip - which will often be longer than the size you'd like. This is to allow for swelling, and most piercing shops will have you return in two to three weeks to have a shorter bar placed.

Aftercare

The lip can often swell considerably after the piercing and will need both facial and oral aftercare to keep both sides of the jewelery clean at all times. Monroes, like all piercings, are prone to infection and it is vital that the piercing is cleaned regularly. Scarring is minimal to none if properly taken care of. It's suggested that you brush your teeth at least three times a day, and if possible, smoke less, or brush your teeth after. Don't play with the piercing, and sea-salt rinses can also aid the healing process - always ask your piercer and see what they advise. Plastic labret studs are available to minimise the risk of tooth enamel or gum damage associated with piercings in this area. You're going to have to expect some swelling at first, but this will go down - healing times vary with this piercing, and it really depends on the thickness of your lip, and how well you take care of it.

Different people have slightly different requirements due to us all being physically different, but there are some standard sizes and jewellery-types usually used for specific piercings.

Made popular by model Christie Turlington, when she showed hers off at a London fashion show, rings or curved barbells are most commonly worn with a belly button piercing, although there's a wide range of ornate jewellery which can be worn. These piercings take quite a while to heal - with the minimum being quoted at around 8 weeks, but 6 months is also quite common, and for some people, it can take up to a year - it all depends on your general health and diet, as well as how well you cra efor it during healing.

Aftercare

Firstly - Ask your piercer for aftercare advice before or after you get the piercing done - any piercer who knows their job will be able to advise you on all aspects of caring for your new piercing and will be only too pleased to offer their experience.

There's a risk of rejection with a belly piercing, like with all piercings, and just after you get your belly pierced, don't touch or play with it, as it really needs time to recover from the initial shock, and to let your body get used to it. If your piercer hasn't suggested any alternative methods you can 'stem clean' your new belly piercing after a few hours of having it done. Get a small glass, fill it with boiling water, and natural rock salt, and then let the water cool for a while. Lean your body forward over the glass so that there's a seal between you and the glass (you don't want all the water to spill out everywhere as the next step is leaning backwards a little:) Lean backwards a bit so that the salty water makes contact with your navel piercing, and let the piercing soak in it for about ten minutes - salt's a natural disinfectant, and the salt water will clean and cleanse you piercing. Next, you have to dry it, as it helps healing, but don't use an old towel or anything that might have germs on it - the goal is to keep infection away from the area as much as possible, so use a clean tissue, and gently dab the belly piercing until it's dry. It's recommended by many that you clean your piercing regulary for around 3 -4 months or until it's healed fully. It's very important to keep it clean to prevent infection, even when you can't really be bothered anymore, as it'll just mean you have to go through it all again if it gets infected.

When it comes to bathing or showering, have a shower if possible, as the water's contiuously running and is therefore more hygienic - however, if you only like baths, or only have a bath, don't use strong soaps , wash you hair, or shave any part of your delightful form whilst in the bath. Strong soaps, shampoo or oils will irritate a new piercing and cause trouble, and shaved hairs may get into the piercing and cause infection. So wash your hair and shave afterwards once your piercing is safe and dry. After bathing, your piercing may look soggy - just leave it for a while, don't play with or prod it, and then clean with salt water, and dry gently.

Wear loose clothing if possible - avoid tight things which won't allow the piercing to get the air it needs to heal, and if you have to wear tight clothes or are involved in sports at school or anywhere, some folks say buying an eye patch helps, which you can use to cover and further protect your belly piercing whilst playing. If you can sleep on your back, it's much better, as sleeping on your front will cause irritation to the piercing as you move around at night - maybe you could try piling pillows up on each side of you so you don't roll over in the night - at least until it's healed a fair bit.

As always, if you have any concerns get in touch with your piercer, as they should be able to advise on aftercar. If you're worried that it's infected, go and see a doctor who may be able to advise on how to sure the infection without losing the piercing - but don't let it get too bad before doing this ...

Barbell style piercing jewelry is composed of a straight bar and with a bead on each end, one or both beads unscrewable for removal and/or changing of the beads. Often one of the beads is fixed, either via epoxy or welding, so that only one bead is used to install or remove the jewelry. Barbell threads are usually right-handed.

They are named because they resemble the barbells that are used in weightlifting.

Types of Barbells

Internally threaded barbell

Internally threaded barbells

Named because the bar has smooth ends with receiving threads tapped into the end of the bar. In internally threaded jewelry, the bead has a receiving tube machined into it (this is referred to as "countersunk"), with a threaded post extending from the center, which mates with the threaded receiving tube on the bar. Being much less likely to cause damage and irritation, especially at the time of piercing, internally threaded jewelry is considered superior to externally threaded jewelry. It is usually slightly more expensive than externally threaded jewelry.

Externally threaded barbells

Externally threaded barbells
So named because the shaft of the bar has threads at both ends to allow beads with receiving threads to be attached. Due to the potential damage or irritation to the piercing when the threads pass through when the jewelery is inserted or removed, this type of barbell has become less common, due to the popularity of the internally threaded barbell. This type of barbell is usually only used when the [[Piercing Gauge And Measurements|gauge]] of the bar is too small to allow it to be internally threaded, or in cheap, mass produced body jewelry. Some higher-end manufacturers make externally threaded barbells with "step-down threading", where the threaded section has a smaller diameter than the wearable section; these are fairly uncommon and usually internally threaded barbells are used in their place. Step-down threaded jewelry ends can be inserted into the blunt end of a hollow piercing needle, allowing for less irritation during initial placement than regular external barbells or even internally threaded barbells.

Also known as a navel curve or curve, so named because of their curvature. A curved barbell is mechanically identical to a straight barbell, except for being curved. Curvature on a curved barbell can range from almost straight to circular, with some barbells actually being spiral, with the ends overlapping but separated to allow the insertion of the jewelry. A variation on this design is a J-bar, a slightly curved barbell (sometimes referred to as a bananabell or banana barbell) with a 90 degree bend near one end, used in vertical navel piercings to position the decorative end of the jewelry more appropriately. A surface bar is a barbell where the bar has a pair of 90 degree bends, in the same direction (similar to a staple), to allow the jewelry to be used for surface piercings. This design minimizes the pressure that would be caused by other jewelry designs that contribute to rejection in healing surface piercings. Most surface bars are custom made to fit the individual piercing.

There are many different types of surface piercing. These piercings follow a channel which follows the plane of a flap of skin anywhere on the body, rather than piercing right through the skin tissue where it's thin enough in a convex or concave area.

Surface piercings are becoming increasingly popular with anti-eyebrows, nape piercings, hip piercings, and many others growing in popularity, and microdermal anchors becoming more widespread.

Sometimes surface piercings are difficult to heal, because, as the body rejects the body jewelry as a foreign object, the jewellery is pushed to the surface, causing the piercing to 'grow out', but proper placement and jewellery selection by an experienced body piercer can help alleviate this problem.
