RE: Returning my Sephora.com haul page 4This is a discussion thread · 114 replies Valerie Belcher: [nq:1]I don't think it is appropriate to return an item unless it is defective or gone bad, or if you ... swatches depend on your monitor and computer system and I feel that they can't be trusted. Just my thoughts. Sarah[/nq]Glad you gave some exceptions for returning cosmetics. I bought Kiss Me mascara at Sephora because people on this newsgroup suggested it works for people sensitive to mascara. It didn't work for me. In fact I reacted to it much more strongly than ordinary mascara and had to remove it in a hurry. Sephora did emphasize that it could be returned when I bought it. So, that is exactly what I did. The only other cosmetic I have ever returned was Clinique's City Block which left my face covered in a rash. Strange, because the sun block they made prior to that worked well. I wish companies would give samples with enough for three applications, since this seems to the the magic number of uses before the rash shows up. I have even suggested that to SAs. They always respond "Well, you can always bring it back".

I request large samples if I know it could be a problem. Break outs etc. Things that can take awhile before it becomes a problem.

They won't get mad and stop shipping to me will they? <:O[/nq] I've never had a problem with returns to them and they've all gone smoothly, whether it's been in person at our local store or online. Thankfully, none of the Misses Fussy Fussbudgets have ever waited on me in the stores and if any have processed my orders, I'll never know. Most don't need or want a long explanation; however, they do understand efficacious business practices that produce satisfied and happy repeat customers. Poetic Badgers "ahmward" (Email Removed) wrote on 05 Feb 2004:[nq:1]how can you justify returning the Smith's Lip Balm? What were your expectations? Audrey[/nq] She should be able to return it for any reason at all. It's her business why she's returning it, not the store's (or anyone else's, I might add, unless the OP chooses to make it so and then it's still her business), unless Sephora's started requiring justification for all returns. As far as I'm aware, they haven't done so. If they have, I'll be sure to take my business elsewhere. Sephora won't sell it again, for goodness' sake. As long as they follow the store's guidelines, imho, consumers should not feel compelled by someone else's notions, constrained by societal or group pressures, or shamed by others into keeping something they don't like, that doesn't work for them, that they simply changed their mind about, or that they want to return for any reason at all. Maladicta1: [nq:1]I don't think it is appropriate to return an item unless it is defective or gone bad, or if you have a horrible reaction/allergy to the product.[/nq]I've never done it but I understand that Walgreen's and CVS will let you return cosmetics that don't work out. If I bought the new Max Factor base, which has no testers or sample packs available, and the color was weird, I'd feel perfectly okay returning it. I contrast this to the distasteful practice of buying cosmetics for short term use gee, I'm stuck downtown with no lipstick or powder and then returning it.

Vicki in DC: [nq:2]I also have the salve and not the balm. I ... it. It was my bad judgment to stray from Burt's.[/nq][nq:1]Good point. Besides I think it would feel weird to return makeup that I've tested. They might think I'm a nut. Swapping is more fun anyway! So then it's off to Makeup Alley! Pam[/nq] Pam: This sounds like the best course of action since you felt you had to return so much stuff. I'm lucky to have B and M Sephoras in my area; several of them. This only underscores my resolution to make sure I see and test out products in person before buying. Texture, smell and true color can't be replicated online. Case in point, I was in love with the Stila All Over Crystals palette until I saw it in person. The glitter wasn't fine, it was chunky. IMO, TOO chunky for me to feel comfortable wearing it on my lips or eyelids. I probably would have wound up ordering then returning had I just relied on Sephora.com because there is no way to tell this texture looking at the palette online. I know many AFers don't have Sephora close by but I do so I have the option of seeing/sniffing in person what I'm interested in and am going to before buying. For the AFers who don't have Sephora close by maybe we could all resolve to do more product reviews?? I'll gladly review whatever new items I buy that are from hard-ish to find lines. Vicki in DC

I'm not* going to swear off *ever trying out anything new because a few people on AF have a problem with returning items that don't work for whatever reason. However, I certainly know better than to actually post about it.

Just my thoughts. Sarah[/nq]But what's a dedicated lemming supposed to do when the products cannot be seen or tested within hundreds of miles? I try to control the urge to order things I haven't seen irl, but it's awfully hard to do. I don't usually return many things but I do end up stuck with some pricey items that just don't do a thing for me. Swapping is okay but it's sort of a nuisance. So today I ordered the Georgia. I am pretty sure I'll love it because I adore Dandelion. And I ordered two Glossimers that are re-buys of colors I already have and love. Still, I would have like to try the Fendi perfume, Donna... cofarb
